Highlights from Microsoft Ignite 2020

Last week me and my community friend MVP Amanda Sterner gave some PRE Ignite 2020 tips. The week is now coming to an end and it is time for me to write a POST Ignite article in which I will summarize how I experienced this week. Since I am particularly interested in all things Power Platform, most of the Ignite sessions that caught my attention had some kind of Power Platform part in it. However, no surprises there, just as expected Microsoft Teams was a huge part of Microsoft Ignite, also in the Power Platform related sessions. By now you probably have heard of Microsoft Teams ❤ Power Platform.

One of the things I really like with community is how you come in contact with people who are equally passionate about technology, helping others and learning together as yourself. I have teamed up with Office Apps & Services MVP Amanda Sterner (her blog and Twitter) who specialized in Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365 and collaboration and we have had a pre Ingite chat. Exciting times sure are ahead of us, with Project Oakdale around the corner and Microsoft Ignite just a few days away. 2020 Release Wave 2 – Learn to surf like a Pro and let’s look at Power Apps highlights!

Today the Release Plans for 2020 Release Wave 2 were released, one for Power Platform and one for Dynamics 365 and the accelerators. It is time to prepare for a new wave, features will be rolled out starting from October 2020 and continue to be rolled out until March 2021. If you have not already learned how to surf like a Pro, I will let you know how to do that. What I mean with a Pro here is that a Pro knows how the waves works and knows how to be prepared when a wave is coming. If you already know everything about the Release Wave process, then you still might find the section about Power Apps highlights interesting to read.

Exploring the ModelDrivenFormIntegration control in embedded Canvas Apps

I have written about the use cases for embedded Canvas Apps before as well as given different examples of how to create an embedded Canvas App. Take a look here for an example of how to implement one of the use cases. In my presentation Deep Space in Power Platform I also have a detailed description about how to create an embedded Canvas App.

There is one part of the app that requires some extra attention though and that is how to make use of the form context, i.e. how to get the information from the record in the Model-Driven App to your embedded Canvas App. In this blog post we will look into the details for just that and I will highlight an issue I ran into when trying to make use of the context.

Combining information from multiple data sources with Power Platform Dataflows

Power Platform Dataflows can be used to load data either into the Common Data Service or into an Azure Data Lake Storage Gen 2 resource, both for utilizing the data in your Dynamics 365 apps or your custom Power Apps and for analytical scenarios. I have written about Dataflows earlier, even before the feature was called Dataflows. Last year Data Integration in Maker Portal was rebranded into Dataflows as part of the 2019 Release Wave 2. In this blog post we will look at how to combine information from different sources and write to the same entity in the Common Data Service.

Scottish Summit 2020 – Deep Space in Power Platform

It has now been almost two weeks since the sound of bagpipes and the sight of kilts. I can still feel the excitement and passion which filled the air at the University of Strathclyde on that Saturday, when we were all united because of the passion for what we do. As usual it gave me so much inspiration and positive energy just to meet with like-minded enthusiasts, all with different experience, viewpoints and great ideas.
